He also broke his back in what was his most memorable accident- while at a friend's house, he fell off of the roof and had to be taken out and to a hospital via helicopter. He was expected to never walk again, though after surgery, he walked out 12 days later on crutches. This experience, he says, changed his outlook on life. On top of that, he sustained an injury while filming The Lord of the Rings trilogy- while riding horseback with a hobbit double, they fell off, breaking Orlando's rib under the weight of the hobbit. Orlando continued filming with the rib in excruciating pain while running across 'Middle-earth' with costars Mortensen and Rhys-Davies pursuing the Orcs in The Two Towers.
-> Childhood troubles: Was made fun of for his dislexia and overweight condition (as a result of a sking accident).
-> Jobs: Orlando's first job was as a teenager, setting up clay pigeons at a shooting range.
-> Career: Got the role of Legolas in The Lord of the Rings just 48 hours after graduation from Guildhall- he had previously tried out for the part of Faramir. After the trilogy's debut, it was instant fame for Orlando as he became the heart-throb of every girl's dreams- Orlando cites the experience as 'awesome.' Though his high profile came from J.R.R Tolkien's books on screen, his first break came with a small part in a 1997 feature film, Wilde, a biopic on the famous author Oscar Wilde- Orlando played a 'rent boy.' He had only one line, though film makers must have been sparked by his way on the big screen because an array of film and television offers followed. Orlando then moved on to big budget films in 2003, including Pirates of the Caribbean with Johnny Depp, Ned Kelly wth Geoffrey Rush, and Troy with Brad Pitt and Eric Bana. Orlando now averages $5,000,000 (US) per film and is booked with blockbuster projects for the next several years.
